YouTube Shorts are designed for quick viewing, but a local file is often more useful for organizing your own work, offline reference, classroom presentations, or editing footage you are authorized to use. If a Short is publicly accessible and you own it or have permission to save it, VidKite can handle the workflow on Windows or Mac.

The quickest workflow
- Open the specific Short in YouTube or a web browser.
- Use Share and copy the complete video link.

Copy the correct Shorts URL
A normal Shorts address looks like this:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/video-id
The mobile Share menu may produce a youtu.be short link. That usually works too. If it does not, open the short link in a browser, wait for the redirect, and copy the complete address from the browser bar.
Do not copy a YouTube homepage, channel page, search results page, or generic playlist page. A downloader needs the address of one specific video.
Choose the right HD quality
The maximum real quality depends on the formats supplied by the original video. A source uploaded only in 720p cannot become genuine 4K through a downloader. When best quality is selected, VidKite chooses from the video and audio formats that are actually available for that public link.
YouTube often provides high-resolution video and audio as separate streams. The desktop app merges those streams on the computer so the finished file contains both picture and sound. Keep the app open until processing is complete and do not remove temporary files while the task is running.
If the file will be uploaded to cloud storage and later saved to iPhone Photos, enable the iPhone-compatible option. It prioritizes the widely supported H.264 video and AAC audio combination when possible.

What to check when a Short fails
1. Test public access
Open the URL in a private browser window. If it cannot play without signing in, it may be private, members-only, age-restricted, unavailable in the current region, or deleted. The normal public download workflow cannot guarantee access to those items.
2. Confirm that it is a video page
The address should contain /shorts/video-id or redirect to a specific video. A creator profile or recommendation feed is not a video URL.
3. Update the desktop app
YouTube changes its pages and media delivery over time. An older client can stop recognizing current pages, so install the latest VidKite release over the existing version before deeper troubleshooting.
4. Compare the connection without a proxy
Download speed depends on the local connection, source response, and available format. A VPN does not always make downloads faster. A slow or blocked proxy node can cause timeouts, so test the same public link without a proxy first.
Desktop app versus an online downloader
A browser tool can be convenient for a single temporary job, but it may be interrupted when the tab closes and can be limited by redirects, file size, or browser behavior. A desktop app is better suited to a fixed save folder, repeated links, visible progress, and remote tasks sent from Telegram or Feishu.

VidKite does not place its own watermark on the downloaded file. The result still reflects the source supplied by the platform. Text or logos already embedded in the original picture are not automatically removed.
Can every YouTube Short be downloaded
No. The product focuses on public content that the user is authorized to save. Private, paid, protected, deleted, or access-restricted content is outside the reliable public workflow.
Where is the finished file
